John R. (Bob) Lang

Vice President and Chief Engineer

John R. (Bob) Lang is Vice President and Chief Engineer for the Space Shuttle Program at United Space Alliance, LLC. Before joining USA, he was at Kennedy Space Center where he served as director of vehicle engineering for NASA’s Shuttle Management and Operations Directorate. In this position, he was responsible for providing engineering management and direction of integration, checkout and maintenance for the Shuttle vehicles.

In 1987, Lang was named the Director of Safety and Reliability for the Safety, Reliability & Quality Assurance Directorate at KSC. Between 1970 and 1977, he served first as the lead engineer responsible for preflight checkout and launch operations associated with the environmental control and life support system. He was then appointed as lead project engineer for test and checkout of the Space Shuttle External Tank. Lang also served as chief of the Mechanical Systems Division overseeing engineering branches responsible for the Orbiter, Solid Rocket Boosters and External Tank.

He joined KSC in 1967 as a systems engineer working on ground support equipment for the Apollo environmental control system.
