Barnes, a senior chemical engineering major at UAH, has completed three co-op assignments for USA. During his co-op rotations, he worked for USA’s Productivity Enhancement and Material Development (PEMD) group, where he was responsible for ensuring that materials, processes and equipment met NASA standards before and after each flight.

“I’ve never met anybody like him,” said Jack Scarpa, Manager of the PEMD group. “He will go the extra mile and pick up tasks without asking. He is helping the organization.”

Barnes’ responsibilities include materials testing to verify physical properties of an adhesive to bond critical thermal protection system materials for the Shuttle’s Solid Rocket Booster.

Scarpa said Barnes also played a role in evaluating a laser scanning system, with his efforts resulting in the successful transfer of the equipment to Cape Canaveral for evaluation on actual flight hardware.

Barnes also was recognized for his volunteer efforts with the “America Read” program and local nursing homes.

“ USA is a wonderful company. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work for them as an alternating co-op student.” Barnes said. “I believe that the things I have learned will serve as a guideline to my future career as an engineer.”
