Close to 50 USA volunteers removed 1,500 pounds of bottles, cans, fishing line, plastic, furniture, tires and many other types of debris.Close to 50 USA employees and their families rolled up their sleeves and removed 1,500 pounds of bottles, cans, fishing line, paint cans, a bicycle, a wheelchair, tires and many other types of debris in support of the annual USA Trash Bash at the Ulumay Wildlife Refuge on Merritt Island in late April.

The USA volunteers were joined by more than 1,100 other environmentally conscious space coast citizens during the Keep Brevard Beautiful Trash Bash 007, and 2 million other enthusiasts across the country, during the annual Keep America Beautiful Inc., Great American Cleanup.

“ USA employees have volunteered for eight consecutive years for Trash Bash at Ulumay Refuge,” USA Environmental Manager Charlie Venuto said. “The hard work associated with a simple act of picking up trash is just one example of how USA and its employees demonstrate responsibility for the environment in our communities.”

The Ulumay Wildlife Sanctuary is a 436-acre reserve and significant natural resource featuring a natural lagoon. It is linked with canals, provides access to local rivers and is recognized internationally among Audubon birdwatchers.

“This was an outstanding effort by the employees of United Space Alliance,” said Jim Kriewaldt, Environmental Programs Coordinator for Keep Brevard Beautiful. “The amount of weight in trash collected and the number of participants increased from last year, so that’s a real tribute to the volunteers and the organization.”

The USA corporate sponsorship of the annual Keep Brevard Beautiful Trash Bash is just one example of how USA and its employees are committed to responsible citizenship to protect the environment and the communities in central Florida. The commitment to ISO 14001 is another example.

“The ISO 14001 certification is a process that documents recognition for the way we approach environmental issues,” Venuto said. “Cleaning up this refuge, supporting the Merritt Island Wildlife refuge and the Florida Wildlife hospital are just a few examples of the behavior expected out of companies that attain ISO certification.”
