USA volunteers have continually demonstrated their support for U.S. military troops through a variety of activities. Most recently, USA employees along with Operation BBQ For Our Troops hosted a welcome home celebration at Ellington Field for nearly 2,000 returning U.S. service men and women from Iraq, Afghanistan, Germany and other locations around the world.
“Operation BBQ For Our Troops is a nationwide community effort to honor the men and women who secure our blessing of freedom,” said event organizer and USA employee Scott Weinstein.
Sponsored in part by USA, the celebration included live entertainment and barbecue dinners for the returning soldiers and their families.
“It was an amazing day. The troops truly appreciate everything being done for them,” said USA employee and volunteer Trudy Duhon. “It is such a pleasure to meet them in person, a joy to support them and to be able to represent this great company.”
In addition to Operation BBQ For Our Troops and Operation Shoebox, USA volunteers are supporting Home For Our Troops. When injured soldiers return, many of them have special needs. The Home for Our Troops group sends volunteer construction crews to install wheelchair ramps and modify homes to provide access and help accommodate individual soldier’s needs. In Texas, a USA team of volunteers led by Tom Murray started its first Home For Our Troops project for an injured veteran in League City. A separate team in Florida also supports the organization under the leadership of USA employee Russell Gambill.
USA ’s longest running support effort is Help Our Military Endure (HOME). The original program was started by USA employee Phil Restivo as Help Our Marines Endure in 2003 but soon grew to include all branches of the military. HOME organizers, like USA employees Bob Elledge, Arturo Retamozo-Barria and Janet Morris, have been conducting critical-needs drives, raising funds and sending supplies, letters and packages to deployed troops for more than four years.
Through all these initiatives, USA volunteers continue to build a tradition of reaching out to military personnel to let them know they are not forgotten.
