USA Huntsville Operations celebrated 2 million hours, or more than seven years, without a lost time incident this August.
“Achieving this milestone is just another demonstration of the employees’ and subcontractors’ dedication to safety,” said Bob Herman, Huntsville Site Executive and Associate Program Manager, Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Constellation Office.
The 120-member team joins several other program elements that have passed the multi-million hour milestone. These elements include Flight Operations, 3.9 million hours; Space Systems (Orbiter element), 1.1 million hours; and Flight Software, 3.7 million hours.
USA ’s Huntsville operation is made up of representatives from 17 different organizations. Each of these has estab lished practices that promote all types of safety awareness. Safety messages in staff meetings cover topics such as safe driving tips, tripping hazards, flight safety and even weather-related safety messages.
“Congratulations to all of Huntsville Operations for reaching 2 million safe hours,” Herman said. “It takes a focus on personal safety and dedication and attention to detail on the part of every employee to achieve this milestone.”
Herman, who relocated to Huntsville earlier this year, said he quickly became of aware of the site’s emphasis on safety. He recognized the new safety representative, John Youngblood, and the Employee Safety Committee Chairperson, Cindy Williams, for all their efforts. He also recognized members and former members of the Employee Safety Committee and VPP Committees and their contribution to the outstanding safety record.
Robert Lightfoot, Deputy MSFC Center Director, congratulated the team on reaching 2 million safe hours and expressed his gratitude for USA’s active involvement in the safety program at MSFC.
USA President and Chief Executive Officer Mike McCulley also congratulated the Huntsville team and stressed the importance of remaining vigilant.
“No matter how good the safety record, the only way to stay safe is to keep safety first everyday,” McCulley said. “The Employee Safety Committee has played a key role in the site’s safety program. You can attribute the excellent safety record to the fact that everyone looks out for one another.”
Other USA executives who attended the celebration were Craig Lovell, Vice President, Safety, Quality and Mission Assurance; Bill Capel, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer; Kathy Tamer, Vice President and Chief Information Officer; Howard DeCastro, Shuttle Program Manager; and Mark Green, Director Environmental Safety and Health.
