Approximately 80 elderly and disabled homebound Merritt Island and Cocoa residents were provided meals this year through a partnership with the United Space Alliance Foundation Inc., the United Space Alliance Volun teer Council and the Community Service Council Meals on Wheels Program.
“Whether it’s delivering a Shuttle to the Space Station or meals to the needy, USA and its employees demonstrate teamwork to get the job done,” said Bill Pickavance, USA Vice President Launch and Recovery Systems.”
The purpose of the Meals on Wheels program is to provide a source of consistent nutritional meals to those who are at least 60 years old, are homebound with medical or physical difficulties, have little or no assistance from family or friends, or have difficulty providing meals for themselves.
Currently, the program only provides meals throughout the week due to funding and volunteer support. In some cases, adding Saturday to the schedule would provide the only weekend meal for some of the clients.
“It has been a longtime dream of the Community Services Council to offer weekend meals to frail elders who go without because they lack a support base,” said Cindy Flachmeier, Community Services Council President and CEO. “This is a good trend, one that the whole community can embrace.”
The Florida Charitable Contributions Council allocated funds from the United Space Alliance Foundation Inc. to sponsor six Saturdays in 2007 and partnered with the USA Volunteer Council to deliver meals throughout Cocoa and Merritt Island from June through September.
“Taking care of those in need in our community is an example of true corporate citizenship,” Pickavance said. “ USA, its volunteers and the Meals on Wheels program are the extended arms to these homebound citizens.”
Since its inception in 1974, Meals on Wheels has supplied 3.6 million lunches.
“I am hopeful that one day all 800 of our Meals on Wheels recipients will have the opportunity to receive a meal each Saturday,” Flachmeier said.
The Saturday program is coordinated by the United Way of Brevard County for the Community Services Council and funded by local community leaders.
