McDonald House Support Impacts Real Lives

USA volunteers contribute to many organizations and help thousands of people each year. The Ronald McDonald House (RMDH) of Galveston is one organization that USA volunteers support. Melissa Tudon was a recipient of a special gift from USA volunteers while she was a resident at RMDH.Each year, United Space Alliance employees volunteer thousands of hours, collect goods, conduct food drives, build houses and help sustain programs that affect people on a very real, personal level.

The Ronald McDonald House (RMDH) of Galveston is one of many organizations that benefit from the giving spirit of USA employees.

The most recent RMDH drive collected bedding and linens to replace those ruined during some recent expansion and renovation work at the facility.

Not only did the drive collect enough goods to replace all the sheets, blankets, towels and other linens damaged, but it netted an additional $300 for RDMH to purchase other necessities.

“Our children are very blessed to have all of you at United Space Alliance to provide them with much needed items,” said Margie Chavarria, Executive Director of RMDH of Galveston. “You are like their Make-A-Wish Foundation. You make their dreams become a reality.”

Nancy Puckett, USA and RMDH Lead Volunteer Coordinator, said that while many people contribute to needs drives because they support the mission of an organization, giving takes on a special purpose when the volunteers develop a personal connection with the individuals receiving help.

For Puckett and several other USA employees, Melissa Tudon, an RMDH client and cancer patient at the University of Texas Medical Branch Children’s Hospital, provided that connection.

In December 2006, the staff at the RMDH contacted USA for help with Tudon’s wish, a laptop computer with letter- and card-writing software for her 13th birthday so she could stay in touch with friends and family at home while she was receiving treatment in Galveston. In less than three business days, employees from Flight Operations, Flight Design and Dynamics, and Information Management provided everything needed for the gift.

“Melissa was very pleased to get her gift, and it brought her much happiness over the past couple of years,” said Chavarra, who called to inform Puckett and the other USA RDMH volunteers that Tudon had recently lost her battle with cancer. “Thank you for making a difference in our children’s lives.”

Pucket points out that Tudon is just one example of how USA volunteers can make a major impact on an individual needing help.

“Sometimes we contribute to these drives for what seems like faceless organizations because we like to give,” said Puckett. “It’s just an organization we like to support, but there is no personal connection. Melissa was an example of the personal impact we have through the many volunteer efforts we have at United Space Alliance.”
