



Charles R. Knarr, Vice President of Flight Operations for United Space Alliance, was recently presented with the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement (RNASA) Stellar Award in the Late Career category.
Knarr was recognized for his outstanding leadership, dedication and professionalism, providing 27 years of technical and organizational achievements and innovative contributions for Space Shuttle and International Space Station flight and mission operations.
Each year since 1985, RNASA has hosted an awards event to recognize outstanding achievements in space and create greater public awareness of the benefits of space exploration. Stellar Award winners are selected based on accomplishments that further activities in space.
“Chuck is an exceptional contributor, innovator and leader in the nation’s human space flight program,” said Scott Hartwig, Deputy Functional Director of Flight Operations. “He is truly deserving of this award.”
Knarr has provided technical, administrative and team leadership for NASA’s human space flight programs in a variety of roles. In addition to his impressive achievements as a leader in the industry, Knarr also has led USA’s Flight Operations organization in accomplishing numerous and significant technical and innovative accomplishments that enabled technology advancements, quality improvements and cost-reduction benefits for NASA, according to the nomination.
Knarr received his award from Astronauts Suni Williams and Leland Melvin.
“As an astronaut, I know first hand that the safety and success of our missions are due to the exceptional people who go above and beyond what is required to make them that way,” Williams said. “The Stellar nominees here tonight truly represent the best in our nation’s space program.”
Melvin concurred.
“As we are all aware, it takes the dedication and effort of thousands to get us into space, and these nominees represent the best of our best,” he said. “Without the contributions of all the folks involved in the space program, and particularly the stellar nominees we honor tonight, it would be impossible to ensure a strong space program for our future.”
The RNASA Foundation presented Apollo Astronaut and former Navy Captain Eugene Cernan with the 2008 National Space Trophy. Also recognized at the gala was renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, Ph.D., who was presented the 2008 Space Communicator Award.
