Young Honored by National Space Club

USA Engineering Integration Director Mike Young received the Eagle Manned Mission Success Award for his contribution to mission success after leading a team to repair hail damage to the Space Shuttle External Tank. The National Space Club recently awarded United Space Alliance Engineering Integration Director Mike Young with its prestigious Eagle Manned Mission Success Award at the annual Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Dinner in Washington, D.C.

The award recognizes an individual who makes a significant contribution to mission success in manned spaceflight during the previous year.

Young was nominated for his work after a Florida hailstorm damaged foam on the Space Shuttle External Tank in February 2007. The Shuttle had to be rolled from the launch pad back to the Vehicle Assembly Building for repair.

Young headed up a large team of people, coordinating a wide variety of tasks involved in providing access to the damaged areas, tracking and scheduling the work and performing the repairs.

“Mike’s level of support and dedication toward resolution of the hail damage issue was unrivaled, even by his past accomplishments,” said USA’s Vice President of Florida Operations William Pickavance. “He continues to do whatever it takes to provide consistent leadership in many issues. It is this type of leadership that keeps the program safely.”

Young said he was extremely gratified when he learned after the STS-117 launch that the thousands of repairs made to the hail-damaged tank held firm on the ride to space.

“This award will always represent the unique opportunity I had to work with a truly great team,” Young said.

Young’s contributions have led top Shuttle managers to rely upon his capabilities.

“Mike’s contributions are in the best tradition and spirit of the Eagle Manned Mission Success Award, and he is deserving of this prestigious award,” Pickavance said.
